R-value

R-value is the measurement given to insulating materials when determining their resistance to heat flow. The greater the R-value of the material, the better its thermal resistance will be. The current recommended standard for attic insulation in Angus is R60, or 22.5 inches.

The R-value recommended for your attic space will be dependent on the climate in which you live. When choosing the right type of attic insulation for your home, be sure to take R-value into account.

In our climate, attic insulation is integral for improving your home’s ability to conserve energy. Here in Ontario, we can experience some of the most turbulent weather in all of Canada, and in order to maintain our home comfort and energy efficiency we must take advantage of our HVAC systems.

This however can cost a pretty penny on a good day, so be sure that your home can retain as much of this energy as possible by ensuring that your attic space is properly insulated, ventilated, and air sealed. In the summertime, the hot humid air from the outside can penetrate your attic space, causing its temperature to rise significantly.

Without a sufficient barrier, this hot air can be forced into your living space, which will force your HVAC system to work continuously in an attempt to maintain a cool and consistent temperature. In the wintertime, the reverse occurs. Instead of hot air invading your living space, it can be lost into your attic space and out through your roof. In both cases, this lost energy can end up costing you a significant amount on your household heating and cooling costs.

If you have noticed higher than average energy costs, or uncomfortable temperature variation throughout your home, you may be experiencing attic and loft insulation issues. Keep more money in your pockets, contact AM Insulation Solutions today for a complimentary, and thorough attic inspection.

Attic Insulation and Your Roofing System

Insufficient attic insulation in Angus can not only cost you an exorbitant amount of money on your energy bills, and reduce your home comfort, it can also have a detrimental effect on your roofing system. During the winter months, the heat from your home can seep into your attic space, causing its temperature to increase dramatically.

As the temperature within your attic space rises, so will the temperature of your roofing material. As most of our homes will spend the season snow covered, this is where problems can arise. As your roofing material heats up, this snow can begin to melt, before freezing again along the edges of your roof, and within your eavestrough system where it colder.

This creates damaging ice build-up, known as ice damming. Ice dams can cause a number of issues, including damage to your eavestrough. As its name suggests, this ice build up creates a dam which can then prevent any future melts from draining properly. This issue can cause leaks to develop within your attic space, and can lead to dangerous mold development on your roof boards and within your attic.

If this pooling water seeps beneath your roofing material before freezing, it can cause your shingles to lift and can cause a significant amount of damage to the boards below. Your roofing system is one of the most important pieces of your home, it protects you and your family from the threat of inclement weather and can be incredibly costly to repair, or replace.

Take preventative measures to ensure its health, and lifespan while you still can, ensure that your attic space is equipped with the proper amount of blown in insulation in Angus.

Fiberglass Vs Cellulose Vs Spray Foam

Fiberglass

  • Fiberglass attic insulation in Angus, is the most cost-effective insulating material on the market. Available in both blown in and batt varieties, this product holds a moderate R-value, and can last for many years.
  • Fiberglass attic insulation in Angus is the most popular material used by home builders, and attic insulation contractors in Ontario. Due to its composition, this product is incredibly resistant to water moisture, resulting in a decreased likelihood of mold development.

Cellulose

  • Composed of only recycled paper and cloth, cellulose is an incredibly eco friendly insulating material. Cellulose blown in insulation in Angus, is moderately more expensive than fiberglass though it also holds a greater initial R-value. While this material does have its pros, there are a couple of issues to be aware of. Cellulose attic insulation in Angus does have a tendency to sag over time, which can result in a significantly reduced R-value.
  • This insulating material is also highly susceptible to moisture damage, and is known to clump when wet, which may lead to an increased risk of mold development within your attic space.

Spray Foam

  • Spray Foam holds the highest R-value of any material on this list, and is also the most expensive by a large margin. Unlike fiberglass and cellulose, which may require hand caulking to ensure all air leaks are sealed, the expansion capabilities of spray foam allow it to seep into cracks, and gaps sealing them with ease.
  • Spray foam should always be applied by a professional, as it has been known to cause irritations and allergic reactions in some people. This blown in insulation in Angus should not be applied to dampened roof boards, or deterioration is likely. This product is also often difficult to remove, so careful consideration should be taken prior to installation.
