Ontario climate action plan, what to expect.

As of Jan. 1, 2017, the Ontario provincial government will roll out their climate change action plan that it says will reduce pollution and lower green house gas emissions through a series of tax increases and the implementation of clean technology to produce a low-carbon economy of the future.

Government action to combat climate change

  • The provincial government will establish a green bank that will serve consumer and business interests that seek financing for energy-efficient technologies to reduce carbon leakage from their buildings.
  • Creating new and expanding additional public transit to reduce air pollution and to drive innovation for zero-emission cars and trucks.
  • Educating and encouraging to make smarter choices for their energy use for buildings, through the use of new government tools to and incentives to make the buildings of tomorrow more energy efficient.
  • Protecting low-income Ontarians from the impact of carbon pricing through a series of initiatives designed to make Ontario one the easiest and affordable jurisdiction to install new clean-energy systems like solar, battery storage, advanced attic insulation and heat pumps to name but a few.
  • Creating a carbon market for trading in carbon credits to help emitters lower their greenhouse gas emissions through the use of other companies that emit little or no green house gases. The proceeds from the cap and trade market will be recycled into the business and industry communities to help them invest in new innovations that will help them reduce pollution through investment in clean technologies. The byproduct of the investment will help lower energy costs, reduce pollution and protect current jobs while creating the green jobs of the future.
  • The government will work with their partners in the First Nations and Metis communities in a collaborative sense to use the knowledge of those communities to create and be guided by a Traditional Ecological Knowledge pact that help the communities build economic capacity to access opportunities that will growth from this initiative.
  • As the programs ramp up, the government will build on the progress that has been established and leading by example, the government will seek to make all government activities carbon neutral. This goal will be achieved across a wide spectrum of activities that include procurement, facilities updates that will create energy efficiency and government operations like transportation and communications.
  • The government will partner with many different interests across the waste spectrum to create new and innovative ways to dispose of waste and air borne pollutions through the use of technologies that will capture carbon to prevent its’ release into the atmosphere. Also, the government will see that environmental stewardship plays a larger role in the effective use of lands and agriculture that will lead to more sustainable use for future generations to enjoy.

climate change and Energy efficiencyBackstopping the provincial climate change plan will be a cap and trade program that aims to cut greenhouse gases by 15 per cent of what they were in 1990 by 2020. Going forward the province envisions a 37 per cent cut in emissions by 2030 and a 50 per cent cut by 2050.
